The City of Plano currently has 34 locally designated sites, referred to in Plano as "Heritage Landmarks." These include structures, sites, and cemeteries which have been deemed significant to the city based upon their own individual merits.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

The Texas Historical Marker Program, inaugurated in 1962, includes both the Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) and subject marker programs. More than 15,000 markers now have been placed across the state, including 3,600 RTHL markers.
